In this blog, I will talk about the famous Agra Fort which was formerly known as Badalgarh. It remained the residence for all the Mughal Emperors until the year 1638.

What is the historical significance of Agra Fort?

The Agra Fort was built by Raja Badal Singh who was a Rajput king. The fort has been owned by various dynasties at different periods of time i.e. Lodhi Dynasty, Mughal Empire, and British Empire. This Fort was occupied by Mughals in 1526 after the battle of Panipat and then this was reconstructed by Akbar, the Mughal Emperor.

This fort has various historic spots inside like Jahangari Mahal, Jahangari Palace, Akbari Mahal, Khas Mahal, Anguri Bagh (garden), Sheesh Mahal, Musamman Burj (The Gilted Prison of Shah Jahan), Diwan-i-Khas, Yamuna Gate, Macchi Bhawan, Diwan-i-aam, John Russel Colvin grave are name to few.

Where is Agra Fort situated?

Agra fort is situated in Agra city of Uttar Pradesh, a state in Northern India. This fort is situated at just 5 KM distance from the famous wonder of the world, the Taj Mahal. It is the second most visited monument after the Taj Mahal in Agra. Taj Mahal can be viewed vividly from the Agra fort.

How to reach Agra fort?

You can reach Agra fort by following ways:

By road: Agra city is well connected with road and it is at the distance of only 230 km from Delhi, National capital of India. Bus service/ taxi/ cab service is easily available from Delhi and Bus is the cheapest way to reach Agra. It will take only 4 hours to reach here. You can also come here on your private vehicle via the 6-laned National Highway and there is no problem of parking in Agra.

By Air: The nearest airport is Indra Gandhi National Airport, New Delhi which is around 240 Km away from Agra. You can also try the option of “Pandit Deen Dyal Upadhay Airport of Agra” for domestic flights from Delhi to Agra.

By Railways: Agra is well connected with Trains. A number of trains pass through Agra fort railway station and Agra Cantt station. You can easily book a train from Delhi to Agra and it will take only 4 to 5 hours to reach here. Railways is the cheapest way to reach Agra.

How I reached Agra?

I booked my train from Ambala cantt station (Haryana) around 11.00 pm and reached Agra cantt station in the morning time (8:00 am) on the very next day. I enjoyed my train journey as it was smooth and I completed this journey in sleep.

Where to stay in Agra?

All types of hotels are available here starting from 2-star to 5-star category. You can book your stay online easily according to your budget.

Where did I stay?

I booked my hotel near the West Gate of the Taj Mahal. The name of my hotel was “Hotel Sidhartha”. It is situated just near the entrance of the west gate of Taj Mahal and the Entrance gate is hardly a two-minute walk from the hotel. The Agra fort is just at the distance of 4 KM from my hotel and Electric three-wheelers and Autorcikshaws are there to drop you at Agra fort from the Taj Mahal exit gate (East Gate). They will charge you INR 50/- per person.

What is the best time to visit Agra Fort?

I would suggest you plan your visit either in the month of November or in the Month of February as the weather will be pleasant during this time period. Otherwise, you can plan your visit from October to March.

If you will visit in the off-season then there will be a scorching heat that will make you tired and the journey would not be pleasant. The weather remains hot for the rest of the months and in the peak winter months (December and January) fog will be there.

Please keep a water bottle with you always while exploring Agra fort as it may take 3 to 4 hours to completely explore this monument.

What are timings for Agra Fort?

The timings of Taj Mahal are from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.

It remains open for all days of the week.

What is the cost of Tickets for Taj Mahal Agra?

It will cost you only 35 INR per person if you are Indian or 90 INR if you belong to n SAARC/BIMSTEC nations. The price for foreigners/NRI is 650 INR.

There is no entry fee for children below 15 years (both Indian & Foreigner).

Only online ticketing is available, no manual tickets are there at present.

A ticket window is available at the main entrance gate.

What things are allowed in Agra fort?

There are certain items that are not allowed inside the Agra Fort including food, headphones, a backpack, cigarettes, lighter, matchstick box, and tripods. However, mobile phones, cameras, water bottles, and wallets are allowed.

Conclusion:

I really enjoyed my visit to Agra Fort and I spend 3 hours there. The architecture mesmerized me. I got astonished to see huge structures inside Agra fort which even my camera lens was not able to capture in full-frame. It is spread in a big area and you have to keep walking for hours to explore it fully. There are a number of photography spots where you can click your beautiful pictures.
